Letters from Home

Previous AFH adopters write these stories. They tell the stories of joy, sorrow, surprise, and – most of all – love that their new family members have brought to their lives.

If you would like to submit your own Letter from Home, please reach out to us via our Contact Us page or send an email to info@aforeverhome.org.

To Forever Home

Thank you for the news letters. We adopted Smokey in January of 2012. Smokey is a 9 pound poodle. A sweetie and protector of our family, including our new grand sons. Smokey is our 4th rescue dog. We wouldn’t consider any other way of obtaining a dog. Please extend our many thanks to all the volunteers at A Forever Home. Their work makes a difference. Rhonda, Andy and Smokey.

Special Girl Charlotte

This donation is from Charlotte…We rescued her almost 10 years ago from AFH. She was from a puppy mill in Missouri. She is a beautiful Cavalier King Charles who is my little special girl and is almost 15 years old. Judi

Scout Turns 10!

Hi Carmen, Maribel, Ken and everyone else who makes AFH so great! We are celebrating Scout’s 10th birthday this week and we wanted to make a donation to honor the occasion. She’s had a rough past year (4 knee surgeries), but she is now all better and pain free! I really miss volunteering with AFH…Anyway. Hope all is well, Holly

Trevor

When Trevor came into our home, he was an anxious, insecure, and reactive 7 month old terrier mix.  My then elderly mini-schnauzer was a calming reassuring influence, but the world was still very scary for him.  After 15 months of training, desensitization, behavioral modification, and just plain maturing, I think Trevor finally realized everything would be ok.  We have since competed in obedience, Fast CAT, rally obedience, as well as been exposed to barn hunting which he enjoys.

On 6/9/19, Trevor completed a milestone achievement, 2 2/3 years in the making.  He earned the World Cynosport Rally’s (WCRL) highest combined rally championship the ARCHMX.  So now Trevor is an All Rally Master Champion, in addition to being a United Kennel Club (UKC) Companion Dog, titled in AKC Fast CAT (100 yd dash after a lure) with an average top speed of 26.17 mph – pretty respectable for a terrier mix, and a Canine Good Citizen with Trick Dog titles. At 5 yrs of age, Trevor now has 2 sisters to play with so life is good and he’s blossomed into a great friend.  Thank you for allowing me to adopt him in 2014.  The photo is a recent one of Trevor in Finksburg, MD where he won 1st and 3rd place in Fast CAT in his height class.

Yours, Diana H and Trevor

Emmett – Best Big Brother

Just wanted to send an about one of the AFH babies! We adopted Emmett (one of the “Twilight”-named pups) back in the spring of 2011. We kept the name, and Emmett is now a sweet, middle aged little guy who loves to snuggle, do his own thing (he’s not a big fan of hanging with our other dogs – he’s a real people dog, LOL), and has been the best, protective big brother to his human sister that came along in the fall of 2012. We are so grateful for him! Pics below – the one pic of him from the posting when he was up for adoption, and a current picture of him snuggling (he’s got a little bit of old-man face now <3)

Scrappy 10 Year Update

Hi!

Wanted to drop a note that after 10 years, we are still loving on our girl Scrappy from A Forever Home. She was adopted under the name Smoky Girl…We recently said a very sad goodbye to her brother of 14 years, Scruffy, and I came across your website in beginning my search for a new pup to love.

I attached some recent pictures of our girl Scrappy (the smaller of the two pups in the pictures). She still loves to chew socks, clothes, couches (we’ve been through a few thanks to her), blankets (which doesn’t prevent us from letting her sleep in our (her?) bed every night), etc. She jumps on our kitchen table when we’re not looking and her 20lb self can even jump onto our kitchen counters! Little troublemaker that she is (we still tell ourselves that her 11 year old self will grow out of the puppy phase at SOME point :-), she is the best worst dog ever!

Jokes aside, all is well. Since her adoption, she is helping us raise 4 kids (one set of twins in there) and loves to play fetch every day. Even when her arthritis kicks in and we have to give her the occasional Rimadyl, she is in good spirits. We also moved out of the city a few years ago and now she has a huge yard for playing and exploring.

Thanks for giving two graduate students the opportunity to share our young lives with this pup 10 years ago. She’s wonderfully spoiled by us, but we are equally spoiled by her as well 🙂

Zoe and Rory Home

Zoe was adopted as a pup and returned to AFH recently. As luck would have it, her brother Rory, adopted as a pup as well, was looking for a new friend. Rory’s mom happened to be looking on our website when she saw a familiar face. Both Zoe and Rory are now happily living together in their forever home!

Hambone!

…Hambone is the long haired dachshund and basset hound mix from A Forever Home. He’s 13.5 years old, and has lost 25 pounds from his original obese weight…Hambone is still kickin’ and living the good life. I have also rescued another dog, a golden retriever/chow chow mix that I’ve named Casserole…Here they are hanging out together! I am also in regular contact with Hambone’s foster mom, Suzanne. 🙂

Tiki

Tiki has blended in quite nicely! The older dogs are a little unsure of her but the cats are indifferent…lol She loves her crate and will even go in on her own to nap. J

Tommy (Charlie)

Just wanted you to know Charlie is doing great in his new forever home.  We just love and adore him!!!  Thanks again for all your help!!  Jenny and Matt.  🙂
