Valentine's Sweethearts
(Altered) — Date of Birth: 03/24/2011 (14 years old (Senior))
Golden Retriever / German Shepherd Dog Mix
Valentine, a beautiful silky-haired Golden Retriever/German Shepherd mix female came into the care of AFH in March -- very, very pregnant! She was turned in to a shelter in West Virginia and soon thereafter they discovered that she was expecting...she spent seven weeks in that shelter before coming into our care, and then five days later, on March 24th, calmly gave birth in her foster home to eight adorable puppies, three girls and five boys.
Valentine's Golden Retriever ancestry is very obvious in the four beautiful blondes, whereas the three brunettes do not look much like her at all -- not her traditional black-and-tan Shepherd coloration. And then there is Van Gogh, a gorgeous, short-haired, black and white "paint" -- if I hadn't "delivered" him myself, I might have thought there was a mix-up at the hospital!!
Mirror, mirror, on the wall -- who is the fairest of them all? Well, that would be VINNIE, who is so white-blonde that you can't really see his true white markings. He looks just like a plush baby toy. Right behind him would be VANESSA, who is very, very blonde, also, but perhaps a shade darker.
They are followed by VICTORIA, and her gorgeous brother, VICTOR...Victoria is a shade or two darker than Vanessa, but her ears are several shades darker, which is really cute. Victor looks like a cup of coffee to which you've added a lot of cream!! (Sort of caf?u lait.) This darker (almost caramel) color makes his white markings stand out beautifully.
The "brunettes" are VALERIE, VEGAS and VAGABOND. Valerie has some beautiful white markings, as does Vegas. He was named that because on the back of his neck when he was born, in white, was a perfect number "7." (Or, if you turned him sideways, it looked like a "V.") Anyway, that has started to blur a little bit as he's been getting bigger, but it's still visible. Both Valerie and Vegas have other cute white markings, whereas Vagabond's markings tend to be black -- black muzzle and wide black stripe down his back. (I think they all have white toes, though.)
Truly, if you think one of these babies is the puppy for you, please send in an application promptly. It doesn't obligate you to anything, but it does put you at or near the head of the line when it comes time to let these puppies go to their new families and their forever homes.
