Valentine

Female (Altered) — Date of Birth: 02/07/2010 (16 years old (Senior))
Golden Retriever / German Shepherd Dog Mix
VALENTINE is a beautiful, sweet and loyal, young and energetic dog looking for her forever home. She came into our care in mid-March from a shelter in West Virginia. It was shortly after she was picked up by the shelter that they discovered she was pregnant and after keeping her in a cage for seven weeks, contacted A Forever Home to rescue her. Five days after arriving at her AFH foster's home, she gave birth to eight spectacular puppies, all of whom have now gone to their forever homes. Valentine was born in February of 2010, and weighs a little over 50 lbs. She is a golden retriever/German Shepherd mix...she has the long, silky wavy hair of a golden, but the traditional black-and-ton coloring of a shepherd. (Four of her puppies were beautiful blonde fluff balls!!) She is wonderful with children and great with dogs, and she even co-exists fine with her foster's cat, although the cat, somewhat elderly, is not amused by Valentine's antics. One small drawback might be her over-exuberance where really small children are concerned, (inadvertently knocking them over, for example.) She loves long walks -- would really love them if she could chase the squirrels and chipmunks -- and she plays until she drops at the local dog park. One of her favorite playmates is an enormous Great Dane. She is quite bright and has perfected her response to the "sit" command. She learned quickly on her walks that she must sit at curbs before crossing a street. She is completely housebroken and is scheduled to be spayed on 6/22. This is Valentine's dream forever home: a family with children, a fenced back yard to run and play and fetch in, another dog or two to be friends with, and -- most importantly -- a home where someone is present much of the day. Not all day, but Valentine is really a people dog and a dog's dog and she is not happy when she is left alone for hours at a time...(although, truly, much of her anxious behavior has smoothed out over the months she has been with her foster. Several weeks in a shelter's cage followed by several more weeks of eight large, lively and demanding puppies would be enough to stress anyone!!) Valentine could be the perfect answer to an adopting family that doesn't want to start from scratch with an untrained puppy and yet wants a faithful and loving companion for many years to come.
