My name is Lucy and I am very lucky to be alive. In April of 2006 AFH saved me from a terrible life. I had lived outside all of my life. I was heartworm positive and had a cancerous growth the size of a baseball on the side of my neck. Most of the hair on my belly and chest was gone after being forced to live outside with the fleas and other pests. I can't understand why my family let me get that way. If AFH had not saved me I would have died in their back yard. My vet removed the growth and told my foster mom that I very likely only had two months to live. She was very sad and promised to make my remaining time happy and comfortable. My picture was taken when she took me swimming at a pool. She took me home with her so I could die surrounded by love. She said she wanted me to die with dignity when the time came for me to go to Rainbow Bridge. I met my two foster brothers, who both liked me right away. One of them really loves me - he always licks my ears. It is now a little over a year since my diagnosis and I am cancer free! Although my foster mom will be heartbroken to give me up, we have decided that I deserve a home of my own - one where I will be the number one (or even two) dog for the rest of my life. While we hope that I will live a long life (I am approximately 8 years old now), there is always a chance that my cancer will come back. I know that some people will not be interested in me because of this, but I know that a special person is out there who wants me - for however much time I have left. I will miss my foster mom but I know that having a forever home is best for me. I get along very well with other dogs. I'm not sure about cats but I think I would be ok with them. I also get along with people of all ages, but I think that very small children might be a bit much for me. A home with older children or no children would be ideal. I am very low maintenance. I am housetrained and never have accidents. I walk well on a slip lead and don't require much exercise. I love riding in the car so you can take me for a ride any time. I'll share a secret with you - I'm a bit of a couch potato. I am very happy to lay at my person's feet. The one thing that I absolutely require is lots of love - lots of pats on the head and kisses. Will you give me a home for the rest of my life? Thank you for reading my story. Love, Lucy.
